Does anyone have experience migrating DS jobs from Version 6 to version 7? What kind of rework is required?

Our general experience with the global customer base is very positive with
upgrades from Version 6 to Version 7.

We just upgraded to 7.0 from 6.0 and didn't have to change any jobs.

We're running on a windows 2000 server to a DB2 database.

Upgrading to DataStage 7.0

Post by admin »

We just upgraded to version 7.0 from 6.0, on UNIX Solaris, without any major
problems. Do not stop the 6.0 server before the upgrade, version 7.0
install process collects project information during the upgrade. There is
NO rework (recompilation of existing jobs/routines) needed after the
upgrade.

Upgrading to DataStage 7.0

Heh. I guess most people never saw this problem:

We changed our configuration files path during development, and never really
took any notice of it while being at 6.0r3. However, once we upgraded to
6.0.1, the job failed to compile. It turns out that $APT_CONFIG_FILE is
now validated while being compiled. It was an interesting surprise, and
freaked out people higher up, despite my constant smoothing talk (smoothing?
hah!)

Actually, recompiling is done during the installation of 7.0 upgrade (as
with any
versions).

Your installation process will actually take a lot longer due to this step
alone, it
could take several hours to automatically compile everything.

Ryan,
We should be able to tell you something in 2 weeks or so...we just
loaded a set of jobs from 6->7 this week but we are on a weeks holiday
now....

As far as we are aware the upgrade should produce no changes....

Best Regards

Peter Nolan

Don --

It is an assumption that with ANY DataStage installation, the dsadm account
is 'clean' -- as in using the default variables. We learned this lesson
with several installations, and it is NOT made clear in any documentations
(I checked). I wonders if this is also your issue here.

Upgrading to DataStage 7.0

Ryan,

As a followup to yesterday's post concerning problems with the DS7.0 Install, I
should add that we ran into at least two problems with PX jobs during the first
day of testing:

1) In a PX transformer, we map a non-nullable column to a nullable column. In
DS60, this is fine. In DS70, the job will compile, but it immediately fails.
Solution: modify job and column definitions.

2) In DS60, After-Job subroutines (execsh) inherit environment variables from
the main job, based on parameters specified at run-time. In DS70 Parallel
jobs, After-Job subroutines inherit the project default environments variable
values, not the values from the job environment variables. (In both DS60 and
DS70, the Before-Job subroutines inherit the values from the job).

Good Luck - I hope your upgrade experience is better!
